Between 2019 and 2022, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Hong Kong adopted a strict zero-Covid strategy that effectively sealed its borders. Entering the city from abroad meant a period of quarantine in designated hotels or government facilities. Throughout this time the photographer never left the city, and instead kept walking up and down and across its territory, searching in vain for a way out. An epigraph from Xavier de Maistre’s Journey Around My Room frames the project: to traverse the room up and down and across, without rule or plan, zig-zagging along every possible geometrical line. This is the special edition, hand-made in 40 copies and accompanied by a small print.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
