More than an ordinary photographer with purely artistic concerns, Harold Edgerton (USA, 1903-1990) was above all a researcher and a scientist in search of new ways of seeing and perceiving the world. His images must be understood as visual and scientific experiments where possible findings are not premeditated. Edgerton used many of those snapshots as works in progress, which served as the starting point for developing and perfecting the discoveries arising from each new experiment. His particular modus operandi allowed him to record routine events by means of an ultra-fast electronic flash system that he himself patented and perfected. Beyond his incredible ability as an inventor and electrical engineer, he left a magnificent legacy as a photographer, which makes it impossible to separate his scientific character from his artistic one. At the end of his life he declared that he had still not achieved the perfect geometry he was looking for in the splash of a simple drop of milk or in a bullet passing through an apple.
