What is a landscape, and how is a landscape represented? Camiolo's research looks at a modest hilly landscape in Sicily that becomes the archetype of the ideal landscape and offers the viewer its possible representations: a drawing on paper, a satellite view, the word landscape in a dictionary, a screenshot of the source code of a jpg file, a scan of a four-by-five-inch negative, a still life of small stones taken from the site. The possible landscape is the set of all these pictures, and as in the final scene of Abbas Kiarostami's Taste of Cherry, the photographic medium is revealed, here through a mirror, as illusion and artificiality.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
