Canary presents a beguiling body of work by a young photographer. The constructed images are steeped in a world of magical realism charged with a primal and animistic immediacy. The world in Lieko Shiga's hands seems pregnant with dynamism and movement, which at times can also be threatening. Throughout the work the viewer is prompted to speculate how the photographs were created: what was her process, what has been captured by the camera and what has been adulterated? In her afterword Shiga writes that to photograph, to shoot, is also to be shot: she builds devices that provoke chance and waits to be shot by the camera unpredictably, losing control of the vision she holds consciously, and she says her body is only a medium, as if she had kept a canary in her belly. After the book's release she revisited the work and created a limited-edition photobook as a companion, Canary-Mon, in which she presents a reading of each of the images with the distance of hindsight.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
