After the release of Canary, the book that won the 33rd Kimura Ihei Photography Award, Lieko Shiga revisited her work and created a limited-edition photobook as a companion: Canary-Mon. For every picture in Canary she looked back on how it was made and wrote a text, examining what happened inside each photograph and why, and spinning out in words, a different medium, the deeper story each carries, an effort that leads to new images. In this smaller volume she offers a reading or explanation of each of the images, but with the distance of hindsight. The plates are therefore not direct reproductions of the original images but photographs of the photographs, made by shining light on the prints once more, then tipped in and only loosely adhered to the page, which implies tenuousness, and the typography too fades in part from the page. Even in her meta-text on her own work, the process and the work remain in a state of flux between presence and non-presence, vibrant colour and fading away. Canary-Mon is encased in a sleeve that cocoons the single-fold binding.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
