Baroness issue 2

The second instalment of Baroness is a photographic storybook penned and visualised by the performance artist Sarah Baker, with Donatella Versace as guest editor. It visits the world of romantic novels, following five outrageous characters through tumultuous affairs, beginning when the American music mogul Angelina Marina, played by Baker, receives an unwanted holiday gift. At stake are her freedom, the loyalty of her daughter, her friendship with The Baroness and the royalties from her hit single Spritz Me with Your Love. Supermodel Helena Christensen plays The Baroness, alongside Simonas Pham, Jonathan Saxby and Meghan Roche. Baker subverts the tired narrative of powerful women as bitches: here the central female characters work collaboratively to deal with blackmail and deceit. Art director Stephen Male designed the book after the graphics and layouts of romantic novels.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
