Introduction by Anouchka Grose
Baroness issue 3

For the third edition of Baroness, the photographer Yushi Li takes us on a journey of desire, fantasy and looking through a photographic study of the male body, in her debut book (m)Other. The naked men in Li's pictures are not intended for consumption: they are staged in scenes, in domestic spaces and mundane activities, and the male body stands as the phallus, the signifier of desire, the desire of the (m)Other. The book gathers the series My Tinder Boys, naked young men in their kitchens, and Your Reservation Is Confirmed, nude hosts in Airbnb rooms, with Li herself fully clothed in some pictures, as well as the recent series Paintings, Dreams and Love, which re-enacts classical paintings by Titian and Hokusai. Li also plays with the power dynamic of looking in the moving-image work I Hope You Like What You Have Seen, in which men performed naked, mundane activities for her to watch via Skype.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
