The definitive 400-page edition of the photographs Seiji Shibuya made on the last tour of the rock band Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, which disbanded in 2003. He followed the whole tour at close range; a first book, Last Heaven, was published by rockin'on in 2003, and this edition reprints the pictures from scratch, with an entirely new selection that includes many unpublished works. It shows the overwhelming performances on stage and the exchange with the audience, but also the dressing room and the moments on the road, getting close to the faces of the members, with a sense of presence and speed that makes the reader feel they are running the tour with the band. Shibuya hand-printed some 400 colour and black-and-white sheets in the darkroom for the new edition. Two more slipcase designs, C and D, were added in 2019: they enclose the space of the Last Heaven tour, with the singer in red light on one, and the audience that shook the venues on the other.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
