Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by Stephen Vaughan (the United Kingdom), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. The book was made at geologically volatile, tectonic boundaries in Japan and north-west America. It presents the experience, memory and anticipation of catastrophic earthquakes within the context of geological time, shared seismic histories and scientific efforts to understand the mechanisms of the deep Earth. The project grew out of an interest in the great earthquake of 1700 on the Cascadia coast and the orphan tsunami it sent to Japan, and was overtaken by the earthquake of March 2011, which struck while the photographer was in Tokyo. The white cover has the title in large capitals over a red-and-grey map of Japan's plate boundaries, the Japan Trench, the Izu-Bonin Trench, the Nankai Trough and the Sagami Trough, with historic earthquakes marked by red stars. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
