Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by Nora Schwarz (Germany), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. The book explores the relationship between humans and forests through the quiet disappearance of Sweden's last primeval and natural forests, part of the boreal taiga, and its consequences for biodiversity, the climate and the lives of the Indigenous Sámi people. These largely untouched continuity forests, the lungs of the North, have been turned since the mid-twentieth century by large-scale deforestation into tree plantations, with habitat loss, declining species and significant carbon dioxide emissions. The book highlights those striving to protect these landscapes and invites us to consider a way of relating to nature grounded in reciprocity, interconnectedness and kinship. The natural linen cover carries a large black print of a twisted tree and the title in black serif type. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
