Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by Stefan Nieland (Germany), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. The book explores the aftermath of the 2024 wildfire catastrophe in Viña del Mar, Chile. Through photographs, interviews, archival material and handwritten notes from group therapy sessions, it reflects on trauma, resilience, structural issues and life under the ongoing threat of another outbreak, and documents the neighbourhoods affected by the fire. The red cloth cover has a tipped-in photograph of dry grass overdrawn with red zigzag lines and a drawn stick figure, with the title and the author's name in tone-on-tone red. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
