Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by Andrea Agostini (Italy), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. Nòstos, or homecoming, explores the complexities of coming of age in a small town: the cycle of leaving, returning and discovering beauty in the things we once ran away from, prompting the question of what we truly define as home. It is a journey through the landscapes of the photographer's childhood in a foggy small village in the north of Italy, a place he once called nowhereland, and a quest for reconciliation with the past. He left at eighteen for Rome; in 2020 the pandemic forced him back to his village, where he wandered the countryside, the alleys, the old farms and the waterways, exploring faces and places he could no longer remember. The memories he had tried to forget become a mosaic of dreams, thoughts and loved ones, transformed by the magic of imagination: the ghosts of the past still linger in the shadows, but they are no longer menacing. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
