Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026

Photobook dummy by Yoshikatsu Fujii (Japan), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. The book begins with the artist's vague childhood memory of his grandfather claiming to have been involved in building human torpedoes during the Second World War. Through research into the history of the Kaiten, the crewed suicide torpedoes of the Japanese navy, and his grandfather's testimony, it confronts how personal memory and collective history are entangled, and questions the conditions that made such sacrifices possible. The project extends from the weapon itself to group portraits of smiling young men and the social climate behind such images, and pushes back against framing wartime deaths as noble. Fujii, who has lived in Hiroshima since 2015, works mainly in handmade, limited-run photobooks. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
