Shortlisted, Dummy Award 2026
Photobook dummy by Mauricio Limón de León (Mexico and Spain), shortlisted for the Dummy Award 2026. The book deals with The First to Laugh, a long-term photographic project documenting the daily lives of windshield wipers, the street workers who clean car windscreens, in Mexico City's Iztapalapa district. It is centred on the author's intimate and mutually influential relationship with Jesús Morales, a windshield wiper nicknamed El Flama. Through landscape and portrait photography, it explores how its subjects navigate a reality shaped by socioeconomic disparity, capturing the complex interplay of comical and profound human interactions within this vibrant community. The cover is a close-up colour photograph of a bare torso with a pin-up tattoo, a rosary necklace and a long scar down the chest and abdomen. The Dummy Award, organised by the PhotoBookMuseum in Cologne, shortlisted 48 unpublished dummies from about 325 entries from more than 45 countries; the shortlist travels on a world tour of photography events and venues.
