A portfolio-style book of 51 large-format prints made since 2015 in a mountain that the Okinawa-born photographer Ryuichi Ishikawa has repeatedly visited. After the snapshots and portraits of A Grand Polyphony and okinawan portraits, which accept what stands before him without bias and look for life, he stands before nature and finds death and life in equal measure, feels his own existence dissolving, and keeps photographing. The pictures blur the borders between human and nature, nullify individuality, reverse inside and outside, and show the transience and connectedness of lives, asking what it means to exist. Each picture is presented as a large print, stacked in the form of a portfolio so that every image can be seen on its own.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
