Inge Morath had begun to devote her attention as a photographer to New York at an early stage. As a member of the Magnum Agency in Paris, she came to New York in 1956 to work with Henri Cartier-Bresson. In 1957 she took her first photographs of this city. Pictures like that of the legendary lama looking out of a car window or those taken in a beauty parlor on 5th Avenue stem from that series – pictures that have meanwhile become part of the world literature of photography. But her photographs of her early years also show numerous motifs from poor neighborhoods, such as shops on Orchard Street or photographs in a downtown park. As in nearly all her works, Inge Morath was mostly interested in the people of New York. People have always been at the center of her artistic attention, constituting the focal point of her loving photographic gaze. This volume meant to preserve her love for New York and its people.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
