Masafumi Sanai has been called a child of mixed race between photography and human: asked how many percent of him is photography, he answered that 70 percent is photography and the rest is human, and he added that photographs can be changed only by photography itself. The book follows the exhibition Pylon held in Tokyo at the turn of the year until 18 January, his birthday, whose many visitors left comments such as that he keeps exploring something he knows he cannot reach. It is a turning point: Sanai plans ten books of the same size and layout over the following years, and Pylon suggests that the end and the start of his wandering lead to a new standpoint. The colour pictures show ordinary scenes, such as open ground under a blue sky, trees, a boat at a quay and a roadside building, on a white cover printed with the title and his name in blue Japanese characters.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
