Being from the North of England, Alasdair McLellan channelled his youthful curiosities into romantic notions of being English and Northern from the moment he began to photograph in 1986. He admires those who have directed generations through their own obsessions, such as Bruce Weber with his playful and sexually charged imagery of America and Morrissey with his unfaltering melancholy and mythological observations, and his work keeps both the edginess of these influences and an unashamedly lyrical pulse. The Northern, working-class aesthetic of Bradford's Buttershaw Estate, immortalised in Alan Clarke's film Rita, Sue and Bob Too!, has a continual pull for him: his photographs play with the tension of the ordinary in the same unselfconscious way as the film's writer, Andrea Dunbar. The monograph is intimate and introspective, edited and designed by the art directors Mathias Augustyniak and Michael Amzalag of M/M (Paris).

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
