Known for his artistic approach to photographing the burgeoning surfing and skateboarding scene of the late 1970s, Craig Fineman took into consideration the overall aesthetics of a photograph, with unique angles and compositions intertwined with an almost architectural feel. The publishers chose to present each photograph in a distinct way, giving a feel of the gravity of the situation while highlighting the gracefully flowing movements taking place: black-and-white views of skaters on the walls of empty pools, shot from above so that their shadows fall across the concrete, one of them flying upside down, and a page of text by Brad Bowman set in the outline of a kidney-shaped pool. Sadly Fineman is no longer with us; the book offers an intimate look at a late-1970s pool skating session, captured in black and white as only he could, and nods to the influence of those pools on modern surfing.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
