Skillfully negotiating the shoals between painting, photography, printmaking and advertising, this enterprising artist takes colour photographs of everyday subjects that he supplements, via Photoshop, with blocks of abstract colour, before making archival pigment prints that he augments with pastel and acrylic. For Falls painting and photography are inherently linked in his mind, and the goal is to engage them with presence: from film to digital painting to painting on paper, the work moves from content to colour to form and back again. He cites the aesthetics of minimalism and the drive of modernism as continually dominant and deserving of perpetual updating, and compares the seduction of an artwork to that of a landscape, which can be quiet and sublime or aggressively colourful, such as driving through the deserts of West Texas or standing on an overgrown hill in Los Angeles: nothing really changes, but its significance lies in perception.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
