Photographs taken from October 2007 to November 2008 with an Olympus Stylus on colour film, when Jocko Weyland had left New York for Beijing, where he lived on Xindong Lu, sometimes tutored English and wrote a column called Raw China for Vice. The city embodied an almost too good to be true, clichéd otherness, with an overabundance of foreign colours, textures, shapes and structures; China, and Beijing in particular, is extremely photogenic. The title comes from a reference to the Forbidden City in the accompanying story The First Bus of Beijing, about riding the number 1 bus, and from a concept taken very seriously in China: the art of placing or arranging buildings and other sites auspiciously. Whether that goal is attained is open to interpretation. The book is one person's photographic odyssey through the sites, roads, byways and alleys of the city, its in-between spaces, objects and flora and their relationships to each other, which made greater Beijing a fascinating, bewildering and close to overwhelming place.
