Photographs of the graffiti-laden Los Angeles River, all taken over the course of a single day, as indicated by the timestamp on Marcopoulos's camera. The grainy black-and-white images show a lone figure on a sandy bank among bushes and a crouching figure on a concrete riverbed covered in graffiti. The wide horizontal format is well suited to describe a functional architecture of concrete overpasses and embankments, barren environs reclaimed by the skate and graffiti communities. Handsomely produced on a mimeograph machine in a small edition.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
