The work is inspired by a story handed down through generations of Afro-Colombians: in the time of slavery the maroons used their braids to communicate secretly the paths of escape towards freedom, mapping topographic references in their hair. Guided by the accounts of Afro-Colombian braiders, the artist brings together their traditional hairstyles and the landscapes historically inhabited by their communities, which are still resisting. The title takes a term for the reliefs of the earth, born of millennial collisions, and turns it on the strategies that oppressed people invent to find paths the oppressor cannot imagine.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
