A series of close-up portraits of the artist and his friends, all those who call South Africa home. Hugo achieves this haunting result through a digital black-and-white conversion process, once again manipulating contrasts through color channels. He emphasizes the pigment, melanin, of his models so that they appear deeply marked by blemishes and sun damage. The result is the antithesis of those images that purport to represent the canons of beauty in popular culture. It is the artist's way of exposing the contradictions of racial distinctions based on skin color.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
