5K Confinement is a commission by Japanese photographer Satoshi Fujiwara realised for “Belligerent Eyes”, an experimental media research project on image production hosted at Fondazione Prada in Venice in the summer of 2016, and later presented within Fujiwara’s anthological exhibition “EU” at the Osservatorio in Milan. Curated by Luigi Alberto Cippini, the project offers an alternative to the representational regimes that have set the ground for a standardised “European photographic identity”: as Cippini writes, “contemporary photographic production seems to be regulated by strict resolution, impact and distribution standards”, constraints that support new generations of photographers while contributing to an average, neutral taste. Fujiwara initiates a pressing and critical action on the gazer through the focal length set from his portrayed subjects and the heterogeneous definition of his photographs, diverting from the standards of photojournalism and of an exclusively documentary dimension to produce a new, emerging visual lexicon of surveillance and confinement.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
