The exhibition dedicated to the English artist Sam Taylor-Wood, one of the most intriguing exponents of Young British Art, included the premiere of a recent video, a series of five new large-format photographic works and a video installation. The video Hysteria (1997) is dedicated to a female figure in a violent emotional state, which the absence of sound and the slow motion of the film make impossible to read as either uncontrollable laughter or torrential sobbing: two conditions that, for the artist, represent alterations of the soul, ritualised emotions that tend to overlap. The series Soliloquy (1998) comprises five large-format photographic works, accompanied by sound, casting the central figure in the upper part of the image with a sequence of smaller images below; the title recalls the Shakespearean soliloquy, and the composition echoes the visual separation of celestial and earthly events in 14th- and 15th-century painting. Noli Me Tangere (1998) is a video installation featuring the reversed image of a human figure with the body of an athlete or acrobat, standing on his hands as if supporting the weight of the building: the classical figure of the telamon is put in question as a fake, fictitious image, where strength is transformed into weakness.
