Introduction by Goffredo Fofi

Begun some ten years earlier, following the thread that binds Biasiucci to his memory, the work on cows grew slowly, settling image by image over time until it became one of the most important elements of his research, focused on primary elements. From Dragoni, his home village, he set off on a journey that led him to Varanasi in northern India. From an evocative animal, photographed in the half-light of a stable that is always the same and is among the last examples of an economy and a family culture tied to the land, the cow becomes the bearer of a peaceful natural sacredness, of the good side of nature: the Great Mother, creator of animal forms, malleable until it becomes earth, mineral, something else. "Photography is light; in many non-monotheistic religions light is the origin, before the word" (Goffredo Fofi).

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
