The book was made to show us the consequences of the deadly infection and the context in which it grows, and above all to show a glimmer of hope. Hope comes from a combination of many factors: aid from the international community, the availability of drugs, medical and scientific cooperation, and the prevention and information work of NGOs. Through Diffidenti’s photographs, CESVI tells of a prevention project it has been carrying out for some years, which aims to stop the spread of the infection through the vaccination of young African women. The pictures take us to a continent where mortality is very high and life expectancy ever shorter, but where hope can increasingly take the place of resignation.
