Still called Endre Ernő Friedmann when he left Hungary in 1931 to study in Berlin, he began photographing for the Dephot agency; forced into exile by Nazism, he settled in Paris in 1933, where he met Gerda Taro, who became his companion: together they invented the "great" Robert Capa. From 1936 to 1939 they documented the Spanish Civil War; Taro died in Spain. As a correspondent for Life and Collier’s he photographed the Second World War, the landing at Omaha Beach and the liberation of Paris, and in 1947 founded Magnum with Henri Cartier-Bresson, David “Chim” Seymour and George Rodger.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
