A city, Naples, a complex microcosm and the centre of countless narratives; two authors, a writer and a photographer, both Neapolitan, who live in it and above all cross it, going into the layers of a many-sided city and its invisible pieces of society. They immerse themselves and let themselves be involved, humanly and politically, and come out with an account at once lucid and committed. Scampia, Castel Volturno, Forcella and Pinetamare are some of the stages of these crossings towards the "heart of darkness" of the city. The pictures build an exceptional narrative that spares nothing of the complicated reality they enter: its sometimes chilling daily life, despair but also humanity, all filtered through a surprisingly intimate gaze. The texts accompany the reader through the same places, telling the voices of those who live there and the efforts of those who have decided not only to survive but to act for change. Words do not illustrate images, nor the other way round: the two languages follow parallel paths, each with its own syntax, each a precious counterpoint to the other.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
