Text by Marvin Heiferman

Subcultures and different ways of life constantly shift and collide, and while the locals think they have seen it all, they are very much mistaken. "No one should come to New York to live unless he is willing to be lucky," E.B. White wrote in Here Is New York (1949), and the pictures here confirm it. Kozloff, a renowned essayist born in Chicago who writes often and insightfully about photography, photographed a series of delightful situations he came upon by pure chance: someone who spent his life analysing others’ ability to tell New York has found his own effective way to represent the city, in an explosive mix of lyricism and impertinence (Marvin Heiferman). It is the first monograph on his work as a photographer: a colourful, multi-ethnic, multi-faceted city seen walking down its streets.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
