Text by Claude Nori

It took more than fifteen years for Franco Fontana, who began in the early 1960s as an amateur at the age of twenty-five, to reach such mastery. He established his reputation not as one more colourist in a time when people fiddled with technology and overdid coloured filters, but as an observer intent on revealing to the world tableaux vivants our eyes had not yet caught. Those lines of sky, those horizons stretched between sky and earth, those delicate or bold colours achieved an unexpected visual synthesis between chromatic perception and photography’s ability to reveal the hidden geometry of nature (Claude Nori). "The hardest thing for a photographer is to understand what he can show and make understood, and then how to make what he carries inside. With the same alphabet, we can all write different things" (Franco Fontana).

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
