Essay by Peter Galassi

A wide selection of the publishing output of the master of Italian photography: more than 250 volumes in over 50 years, from the first, Biagio Rossetti architetto ferrarese (1960), to Storie di un fotografo (2013), witnesses to his passion for photography and his love of books, these strange objects able to hold stories, spark debate and point out paths. Each title has a technical entry, often double pages showing the chosen images and the layout and, when possible, a quotation or comment putting it in context. Leafing through it means following him in his favourite adventure, making pictures that can end up in a book, and discovering how much these volumes are the liveliest witness of our recent history, of the way we think of ourselves and of photography. They also tell the changing taste of publishing and design, and his many encounters with intellectuals and writers who wrote for him and about him (Mario Soldati, Cesare Zavattini, Renzo Piano, Giorgio Bassani and many others) and with fellow photographers.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
