The interviews of Henri Cartier-Bresson: a chance to meet a dynamic, spontaneous reflection on photography in the great French photographer’s own voice. For once it is not his famous pictures but his words that guide us into his world: light and shadow, instants caught with skill, subtle geometries, but above all human beings. Man and his life, "so short, so fragile, so threatened", were his favourite subject. Although he took many notes on his reportages and kept up a constant correspondence, he wrote little about his practice: only four or five texts in his lifetime, and L’Imaginaire d’après nature is a slim volume of some twenty short pieces. He preferred to leave words to his writer friends. It is in interviews that his thought can be traced most vividly: there he was not sparing with words.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
