In parole series

The editor asked many writers what drove them to dig into our recent past, and how, according to their inspirations and vocations, they went about it: an invitation to explore the past and the way it created and shaped our present, taken up by authors such as Nicola Lagioia, Roberto Saviano, Antonio Scurati, Walter Siti, Elena Ferrante, Wu Ming 1, Antonio Pascale, Alessandro Leogrande and Benedetta Tobagi. Their answers are set in dialogue with the work of Italian photographers of the same generation, committed to telling the country: snapshots of an Italy at a standstill and an Italy on the move, of a country that has a past and struggles to find a future. The photographic stories are by Tommaso Bonaventura and Alessandro Imbriaco, Giulio Piscitelli, Francesca Leonardi, Tommaso Ausili, TerraProject, Gianni Cipriano, Alessandro Toscano, Luca Campigotto, Nicolò Degiorgis, Emiliano Mancuso and Manuela Meloni.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
