Introduction by Gabriele D’Autilia and Enrico Menduni

The Liberation of Italy lasted two years, from the Anglo-American landing in Sicily in July 1943 to the German surrender in April 1945. This long and painful process was staged by two opposite photographic gazes, those of the photographers of the Istituto Luce and of the Signal Corps of the United States Army. Gazes that give back two Italies and two different wars and observe each other, compared here for the first time. Divided into thematic sections, the book documents the end of the war through the faces of the defeated, grief and destroyed monuments, but also moments of daily life, embraces, amusements and moments of despair. The Italy that emerges is tragic and glorious, of courage and defeat, fear and joy, dark violence and a boundless will to live: a country about to enter the best post-war years, with democracy, great cinema, reconstruction and the search for prosperity. It accompanies the exhibition at Palazzo Braschi in Rome in 2015-2016.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
