The story, in words and pictures, of two sisters, Claressa and Briana, who live in Flint, Michigan, followed by the American photographer for five years, during which he also made the film T-Rex and the interactive web series Flint is a place. The real protagonist is Flint, a town sadly known for its high poverty, social hardship and widespread crime. Claressa is only twenty-one, eighteen months older than Briana; their life has been hard since childhood, with their father in prison for most of it and their mother an addict, like most people in Flint. With one significant difference: at eleven Claressa joined a local gym and began training in the ring. In 2012 she was the first woman to win Olympic gold in London, the year women’s boxing debuted at the Games, and in Rio in 2016 she won a second consecutive gold: a girl who found in boxing a way out of her home town. The pictures also show the life of Briana, trapped in the quicksand of Flint, a place without jobs or resources: fights, drugs, school left unfinished, raising a two-year-old son alone while his father is in prison. If Claressa is the exception, Briana is the rule. But she is no martyr: she is strong, charismatic, with character.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
