Interview with Franca Sozzani
Fashion photographs are glamorous, elegant, beautiful, magical. Many were born in the pages of magazines and from the work of editors and art directors such as Diana Vreeland and Alexander Liberman, who from the pages of the Condé Nast publications steered, guided and promoted the careers of the great photographers. It is the creative collaboration between the editorial office and the photographer that makes fashion photography innovative, often provocative, yet always able to capture and even anticipate the style of the moment. The book, and the large exhibition it accompanies, gathers the early, precious work of celebrated authors such as Horst P. Horst, Erwin Blumenfeld, David Bailey, Guy Bourdin, Corinne Day, Deborah Turbeville and Sølve Sundsbø, which appeared in Vogue, Glamour and other Condé Nast magazines. The curator gathered the original material in the Condé Nast archives in New York, Paris and Milan, to offer not only the work of more than eighty authors but a remarkable synthesis of the history of fashion photography and its continual, changing, incredible transformations.
