Introduction by Alessandra Mammì and Alessandra Mauro

The book gathers twenty-four pictures chosen and commented on by outstanding witnesses of the work, intellectuals, colleagues, film directors and architects. Sebastião Salgado calls him simply Gianni, "the photographer of man", and picks a working-class family in 1950s Paris; the sociologist Domenico De Masi sees in workers heading to the factory a modern Quarto Stato; Marco Bellocchio reflects on the horror of the asylums, Renzo Piano is enchanted by a building under construction, Carlo Verdone is moved by the magic realism of children, and reflections in a train window spark a story by Alina Marazzi. His world is our world. Completing the book are a detailed biography and thematic sections of pictures with his own texts: Venice, Milan, the world of work, asylums, Gypsies, protest, the story of Italy, portraits, the home and the world, from landscapes to the great cruise ships.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
