For more than thirty years Gao Bo has shaped his work on the frontiers of photography, installation and performance. He found his vocation on a first journey to Tibet in 1985, where he made a series of portraits of striking classicism and mastery, and returned many times in the 1980s and 1990s, recording the age-old rites of Buddhist monks and the daily life of a people imbued with spirituality, in a vast mineral landscape between sky and earth. Soon he felt the limits of his practice and began questioning and reinventing it, nourished by Marcel Duchamp and by the thought of Lao Tzu. Taking up the prints from his first Tibetan journeys, he covered them with ink, paint and his own blood. Over the years his interventions became more and more extreme and verged on performance, going as far as covering monumental prints with black paint or burning a whole series of portraits of men condemned to death to collect the ashes. He keeps pushing the limits of the medium, questioning disappearance, the trace and possible renewal through a creative process on the frontiers of destruction. The four-volume box accompanies his retrospective in Paris, mixing a conceptual path with material research.
