Interview book by Sabrina Ferilli with Alessandra Mammì
An interview book written with Alessandra Mammì, who also signs the introduction. In the first volume of a new Contrasto series telling Italian cities through the eyes of special citizens, the Roman actress talks about her life for the first time, in an original and unconventional autobiographical form, starting from her city, of which she has become an icon (think of her role in La grande bellezza, where she embodies the dying vitality of the Eternal City). The book is conceived as a long walk of memory that weaves her personal and public story with the streets and history of Rome through observation of and comment on the pictures of great photographers past and present who have portrayed the city over the years: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Herbert List, Gianni Berengo Gardin, William Klein, Bruno Barbey, Elliott Erwitt, Martin Parr and others. The images prompt a comparison between the Rome of yesterday and of today and on the sense of belonging of those who live there. It starts from the actress’s childhood in the districts she is most attached to, such as Prati and the historic centre, then tells of her debut in the theatre with Garinei and her work in cinema and at Cinecittà, life in the 1980s and the strong influence of the values of the Communist Party, of which her father was an official. Each piece of this memoir is a declaration of love for the capital, its monuments, aqueducts, fountains and parks, August Sundays in Ostia, peripheries torn by the economic crisis and hordes of tourists. The book also includes an anthology of writings on Rome by authors including Ennio Flaiano, Paolo Virzì, Raffaele La Capria, Pier Paolo Pasolini and the Modena City Ramblers.
