From 2004, and for some years after, the photographer was the guest of a friend in Venice so as not to miss the chance of portraying the city from one particular window. The view over the fish market, the Rialto Bridge (still made of wood in Aretino’s day), the Fondaco dei Tedeschi and above all the coming and going of people are caught by his lens and set in dialogue with the words of the writer Pietro Aretino, who, describing that view in a letter to the owner of the palazzo, Domenico Bollani, had called it "the most delightful view in the world". Aretino, who took refuge in Venice in 1527 to escape the Rome of Pope Adrian VI, writes of "vines in the barges", of birds for sale in the shops and even of "fair brides shining with silk, gold and jewels", falling under the spell of a magical city unique in the world. The book sets up an ideal dialogue between the photographer, who lived in Venice for years, and the writer: both watch the flow of daily life, the trade, the hordes of tourists and the regattas. The pictures show what has changed and what has stayed the same. Different eyes, separated by centuries, meet in this volume on the same undisputed beauty: Venice.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
