Numbers turned upside down, the 8 laid on its side, time set free: in this book Mario Martone edits the photographs of his theatre, film and opera works with the same criterion he adopted to conceive the exhibition at the Madre in Naples, building a visual flow in which different periods and languages speak to one another. It was the first retrospective solo exhibition devoted to the Neapolitan director, and it also showed the first image of the film Capri-Revolution, in competition at the 75th Venice Film Festival, some stage props, and a nine-hour film-flow, now in the museum’s permanent collection, based on the digitisation of the materials kept in the Mario Martone Archive. The book follows a constant experimenter from his first performances in the 1970s to Capri-Revolution. "Radical mutations (almost metamorphoses) are interwoven in Martone’s work with long-standing constants (almost obsessions): his is a very strong identity as a director, combined with flexibility, eclecticism and inexhaustible curiosity" (Massimo Fusillo). More than 150 images form the central section, a true film on paper that takes the reader through performances, theatre shows, films and opera stages, meeting the great figures who have worked alongside the director since his beginnings. A long chronology sets his whole output in context for the first time, making the book also an essential research tool.
