Resilient is Marco Gualazzini’s first book: the reportages he made in Africa from 2009 to 2018. Resilience is the capacity of a system to adapt to change, and Gualazzini sets out to tell precisely this capacity of Africa, looking for stories to tell with images. His research began by investigating the relationship between religion, witchcraft and mental illness in eastern Congo, where there was only one psychiatric hospital and the mentally ill are still considered possessed. He then covered mining exploitation in Congo, the war in Mali, rape as a weapon of war (15,000 women are raped in Congo every year), Islamist infiltration in sub-Saharan Africa and the refugee policies of impoverished Uganda, as well as South Sudan and Somalia, perhaps one of the most inaccessible countries, where foreigners are targets of al-Shabaab. The latest work, from 2018, bears witness to the humanitarian crisis along the Lake Chad basin caused by desertification as a consequence of climate change. They are stories of women raped in Congo, of Somali girls in perpetual flight from hunger, of girls in the refugee camps of Chad, but also of the cruel militiamen of northern Mali, the Ganda Koy, "sons of the land", holding machine guns while wearing football shirts, and of the desperate march of the people of the Nuba Mountains fleeing the bombings of the Sudanese government. Page after page the images travel "almost the whole way round the continent", accompanied by long captions that are parallel stories.
