Thirty years of travel, in Africa and Asia above all, thirty years of work celebrated all over the world. The pictures in this volume follow the thread of everyday life and of the customs of men and women across the globe: bright colours, extreme close-ups, landscapes full of nuance and distant cultures, all the traits that by now define McCurry’s style. They are images of shepherds, traders, children at school, endless African deserts and marvellous Indian sunsets, gathered over a long career in photojournalism. There is no great event in the book, only that normality, sometimes tragic, sometimes precious, which carries us into a still, suspended dimension of time. "My life is shaped by the urgent need to travel and observe, and the camera is my passport," says McCurry. The beauty of the African landscape, the tones and light of Cambodia and the purity of an Afghan child’s eyes draw the map of an immense planet of which we badly need to feel part, a kaleidoscope of colours in which people go about their daily work from one country to the next.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
