Subtitled "Uno sguardo pubblico e privato", the book retraces the exhibition devoted to the Roman photographer Marina Malabotti, who died prematurely, held at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome. Its success with the public consolidated her reputation, rediscovering her figure and her personal aesthetic research. The pictures show a marked sensitivity to the human condition, the ability to observe reality in depth and above all to identify with the subjects of the image; the bond between photographic art and society is very evident in her work and shows her contribution to the photography of those years. The work is divided into two sections, faithful to the layout of the exhibition. The first gathers the pictures of a project called Un anno in Galleria: etnografia di uno spazio artistico (1981), devoted to the events held inside the gallery and to the people who took part in them, from the President of the Republic Sandro Pertini to Renato Guttuso, by way of the workers who installed the shows. The second is devoted to ethnographic enquiries into the communities of southern Italy that she carried out between 1970 and 1984, with particular attention to the small aspects of traditional ritual and symbolism, from religious feasts to popular rites. The introductory texts are by the curator of the exhibition, by Luigi M. Lombardi Satriani, who offers a personal memory of her, and by Roberta Valtorta, who places her work in the context of its years and brings out its innovative value.
