Based on the Cikáni dummy prepared in 1968 with the designer Milan Kopřiva
Redesigned by the author for this pocket edition

An updated version of the celebrated title. It is the original dummy of Cikáni — the Czech word for gypsies — prepared by the author and the designer Milan Kopřiva in 1968, which should have been published in Prague in 1970. Compared with the large-format edition, the first Italian one published in 2011 in a limited run, which came closest to the original idea of the book with the upright frames reproduced full page and the horizontal ones across two, this new version is wholly brought up to date in format, cover and design, and carries two new texts. Cikáni is the first core of the author’s career, never disowned as many tend to do and indeed taken up again by him now, rethought and redrawn in person for an unpublished paperback version. The publishing project was already born in 1968, but he carried it on for years through adventurous turns tied to the appearance of the title, which would come only much later, in 1975 and in America.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
