Introduction by Alessandra Mauro
Three sections: Corpi, superfici diverse; Africa; Ritratti
Closing interview by David Fahey, 1987

The volume is divided into three parts that run through the whole creative world of Herb Ritts, with short comments by the author or by the people he worked with set among the images. The first part gathers the work in which his close attention to the plasticity of bodies is plain and, combined with a careful study of classical composition, turns into extremely balanced and natural frames. Then comes Africa, a continent that always held a great pull for him and to which he devoted many journeys, even a few days before his death. The last part concentrates on portraits: many of these are icons that helped make some great artists famous, among them Madonna — the cover of True Blue is his, as is the direction of the video for Cherish — David Bowie, Richard Gere and Elizabeth Taylor. The volume closes with an interview made in 1987.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
