Talks by Michele Smargiassi, Claudio Marra, Federica Muzzarelli, Daniela Persico, Ferdinando Scianna and Giovanni Chiaramonte
From the Leggere la Fotografia series of the Fondazione Forma, Milan
Logos series

The book gathers close readings of some of the books that made the history of the medium: titles, authors and ideas that are always current and that point to new ways of seeing, opening onto new discoveries. Seven essential classics are presented by special readers — scholars and practitioners who took part in a cycle of meetings organised by the Fondazione Forma in Milan. In a series of impassioned conversations, Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin, Susan Sontag and László Moholy-Nagy are read and discussed; Henri Cartier-Bresson and his Images à la sauvette, like William Klein with New York, are taken up by Ferdinando Scianna, while Giovanni Chiaramonte tells of his revealing, startling encounter with Minor White and Mirrors Messages Manifestations. These are books made to be read and read again. What is offered is not a set of formal lectures but a path through ideas, impressions and the recollection of the first time that particular volume was discovered, picked up and leafed through — that mysterious and decisive object which is the book.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
