Introduction by Alessandra Mauro
Project begun in 2009
The book of an author who through his work explores society and what it is to be human, and who has won important international awards. The volume is the fruit of an artistic project begun in 2009 that sets out to represent disability without stereotype and in its many facets, in an effort that celebrates difference as a resource for the whole of humankind. Fifteen per cent of the world’s population lives with a disability, and the aim here is to throw new light on their stories, on the difficulties they meet even in extremely hard social settings, and on their capacity to find a place within them. As Alessandra Mauro writes in the introduction, faithful to a great tradition that rests on the possibility of taking things as they are, without pretence or ornament but with a clear and at once hungry eye, he has managed to make this remarkable collection: portraits of people met in the four corners of the world, each carrying a story gathered with passion, delicacy and curiosity, as a tireless traveller of the eye would do. Every portrait in the series is centred on the subject, seen first of all as a person whose disability is only one part.
